Skiing, Snowmobiling, Tubing, Hiking, and Ice Fishing

January 21, 2019

If it’s winter in Allegany County there’s still plenty to do. Sure, we may have some crazy weather, it may range from wind chills to minus twenty on some days, but there are also a good number of days when the sun is out and it’s a balmy 25 degrees. And there’s still beautiful sunsets. If you’ve grown up here you know those days are our activity days. If you’ve lived here long enough you will also notice people wearing shorts and barbecuing outside on their grills on these kind of days in the winter.

You are able to enjoy many activities year-long here, yes even in the winter. In the northeastern part there is the Swain Ski Resort. The hilly terrain in its picturesque setting brings people out for family fun. It is everything you’d expect for in a ski resort, and it also offers things you wouldn’t expect too. From those looking to learn how to ski to those who are seasoned veterans of the sport, there are runs that cover all levels of abilities. There’s also tubing for those who wish to sled instead. When you start to feel a little chill, there’s also the onsite restaurant and bar to take a break and warm. Come on a night when there’s live entertainment and bring your whole circle of friends for a memorable time!

It’s located just south of Rochester, and is easily accessed, For more information on pricing and specials, contact them at Swain Resort, 2275 County Road 24 Swain NY 14884 ● (607) 545-6511

Maybe skiing and tubing aren’t quite what you have in mind; perhaps hiking, snowmobiling, or an outing of ice fishing is more to your liking.

All of those are taking place here in the winter. It all depends on Mother Nature of course of their availability. Usually by February the ponds and lakes are frozen enough for ice fishing.

Sometimes ice is actually thick enough that snowmobile racing takes place on Alma Pond. One never knows if the race is on or not until last minute, but when it does it is a family-fun event for all. Keep an eye out on the Alma Rod and Gun Club Facebook page for more information on that.
